Help make No.10 communications accessible to BSL users

Our Prime Minister must communicate to everyone across the nation. When they speak, they should be accessible to everyone, including the 87,000 Deaf people across the UK who use British Sign Language (BSL) as their first language.

True accessibility and equity for the Deaf community on these occasions would be achieved by having an on-platform BSL interpreter with the Prime Minister whenever they address the nation. Yet the UK has fallen behind world leaders across the globe and has never provided this access to deaf BSL users. This is despite the Government making a commitment in February to provide 'in-situ BSL interpretation for all major press conferences and briefings' by this spring.

We believe that the General Election provides an opportunity for the main contenders for Prime Minister to demonstrate their commitment to make themselves accessible to the Deaf community. We are therefore calling on the two leading candidates to be Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer, to commit to being accessible to deaf people after the election, starting from day one.

To do this, we have booked a registered BSL interpreter to support the delivery of the first speech delivered by the newly elected Prime Minister on 5 July, from Downing Street. Our interpreter will be in Westminster, ready and waiting to make the speech accessible to the Deaf community, if the new Prime Minister has not already committed to doing this themselves.

But we need your help. Please contact both Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer to ask them to commit to being accessible to the Deaf community if they win this election. We want them to commit to having a BSL interpreter beside them when they make their speech on 5 July, setting an important precedent for being an accessible Prime Minister, and leading an accessible Government for the Deaf community.

Ask Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer to commit to being an accessible Prime Minister for BSL users

E-mail the two main party leaders and ask them to commit to being BSL accessible from day one if they become Prime Minister at this election.
